The Mind-Body Connection to Getting Pregnant!

When we talk about getting pregnant, we usually talk about things like:
* when do I ovulate?
* what am I eating?
* is my body weight normal?
* how are my hormone levels?
* are we timing sex right?
* how old am I?
* have I given up coffee?

But, oftentimes, the causes of infertility (especially that which is unexplained) has a very deep body-mind-spirit connection. I was reading a wonderful book by Christiane Northrup yesterday called, “Women’s Health, Women’s Bodies” and she devotes a chapter to fertility. In it, she says the following, “Prenatal and birth memories, and their potential impact on the unborn, are one of the many reasons why women must learn to manage their fertility well and learn how to conceive consciously. We must become conscious vessels. When a child perceives that she is loved and wanted from the very beginning, her sense of safety, security, and belonging creates an enormously resilient immune system as well as bone and blood health that set the stage for a lifetime of health… The important point is to see your body as a channel for a new spirit and to surrender yourself to the experience- to be open to all that it has to teach you.”

Having gone through four years of secondary infertility, when I work with clients who have been TTCing for a while and are having trouble, one of the first things we discuss is this mind-body connection. What views do you have about having children and being a parent that you got from your own parents growing up? What reproductive history has happened in your family and how has that affected you (i.e., miscarriages, abortions, having too many kids, too few kids, and those family members views on what having those children meant to them)? What fears do you have about getting pregnant, having children, and being a parent? What feelings of scarcity, loss, love, insecurity, jealousy, sacrifice, stress do you have pertaining to getting pregnant, being pregnant, labor and delivery and rearing children? All of these are questions that must be worked through if conception is going to happen consciously. These are questions that must be asked apart from the nutrition/exercise/ovulation checklist.

Do You Have a Sweet Tooth? I Do!

I love sweets. I have to have something sweet with each of my meals. Most people would think, "How could I possibly lose weight if I'm eating sweets everyday." I say, "How can you not if you savor the taste of something sweet everyday?" Moderation is the key. So, for all of you sweet tooths out there, here's a wonderful recipe that I like to make and have with low fat ice cream or sherbert. It's strawberry bread and it's delicious!

WARNING: I have a sliver at a time so I can have three slivers over the course of a day (which really equals to 1 slice by the end of the day). This is so good it's dangerous!

Strawberry Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups unbleached whole wheat flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 egg whites -- whipped
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup applesauce -- at room temperature
2 cups strawberries* -- chopped

Directions:
Preheat oven at 350. Prepare pan(s) with cooking spray and flour. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In another bowl, combine egg whites, vanilla, applesauce, and strawberries. Mix dry ingredients with wet ingredients just until moistened. Pour into prepared pan(s) and bake for 25 minutes depending on pan size.

*If using frozen strawberries, measure them after defrosting and draining them.

Can You Make it Up a Flight of Stairs?

Looking good and feeling good are great reasons to get into optimal health and fitness. But there are many other reasons. Two of those reasons are:
1) Improved cardiovascular health
2) Increased immune system strength

Our bodies are here to protect and carry us. When you change the way you look at your body, it no longer seems like a burden or a by product of your genetics. You can now look at your body as this engine that needs to be fueled. What you put into it, you get out of it.

Studies have shown that when you exercise on a regular basis (at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session), you experience:
- a healthier heart that can pump blood quicker and more efficiently to the muscles in your body (better circulation)
- hormonal imbalance (this affects everything from blood sugar levels to fertility)
- improved digestion (exercising makes your body better at getting rid of waste- you're regular!)
- increased metabolism (when you work out and tone your body, you burn more calories while you exercise AND the other 23 hours of the day when you're not exercising)
- increased immune system resistance and balance

These are just a few of the benefits. There are so many reasons why you should get fit, why exercise is vital to your life but when we look at the statistics, only 10% of the population has a gym membership.

If we know that getting fit is key to living our best lives, why are we not doing it?

Here's the answer: DESERVING

When you know you deserve the best, you BELIEVE that you can achieve the best and when you believe that you can achieve the best, you take the necessary ACTIONS to live the best and you, therefore, BECOME the best. It all begins with THOUGHT.

The bottom line?
